You're not choosing between a good PC and a bad one. Every CLX system, prebuilt or custom, runs the same components you'd find in a build guide from Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed. The real choice is about who's making the decisions and how long you're willing to wait for them.
What 'Prebuilt' Actually Means at CLX
A CLX prebuilt system or “Ready-To-Ship” is a configuration we've already speced, built, and burned in before it ever gets a customer's name on the shipping label. Think a Ryzen 7 9800X3D paired with an RTX 5070 Ti in a case we've already validated for airflow and cable routing. It ships fast because the guesswork is gone. Every unit gets stress tested on our bench before it leaves, and it comes with CLX's warranty and support behind it from day one.
This matters most if you don't want to spend an evening researching whether a specific motherboard's VRM can handle a 9950X3D at stock power limits. You just want the machine to show up and run your favorite game without you touching a BIOS setting.
What 'Custom-Built' Actually Means at CLX
A custom build starts with you, not with our catalog. Want a Core Ultra 9 285K instead of an AM5 platform? Need 64GB of DDR5 for video editing instead of 32GB for gaming? Prefer a specific case because it fits under your desk? That's what custom unlocks. Our build team still assembles and tests it, same standards as any prebuilt unit, but every part on the spec sheet is one you picked for a reason.
The value case for custom shows up when your use case is specific. A streamer who needs more cores for encoding while gaming isn't well served by a general-purpose gaming config. Neither is a 3D artist who needs 64GB of RAM and doesn't care about a top-tier GPU. Custom lets you put budget where your workload actually needs it instead of paying for balance you won't use.
Where the Real Differences Show Up
Build time. Prebuilt ships from existing stock, so it's out the door fast. Custom builds take longer because we're sourcing your exact spec and building it to order.
Cost. Prebuilt pricing reflects a system we've already validated and stocked, so you're paying for that readiness. Custom pricing is yours to control. If you don't need a top-shelf cooler or RGB everything, skip it and put that money into the GPU tier that actually affects your framerate.
Performance. Match the specs and you get the same performance, full stop. A Ryzen 9 9950X3D and RTX 5090 perform identically whether it came from our prebuilt lineup or a custom order form. The silicon doesn't know which path it took to your desk.
Support. Both paths get CLX's warranty and our build team's testing standards. Custom doesn't mean you're on your own, and prebuilt doesn't mean you get a lesser process.
Which One Fits You
If you want a tested, ready-to-ship system with zero setup decisions on your end, go prebuilt. If your use case is specific enough that a general config would waste money on parts you don't need, or you have strong opinions about your platform, go custom. Neither path is the safer or smarter one. They're built for different people with different priorities.
Not sure which fits your setup? Start with our Custom PC options and build the spec sheet yourself. You'll see real-time pricing on every part, whether you're picking from a tested prebuilt config or starting from a blank slate. If that seems overwhelming or unnecessary, you can instead view the Ready to Ship options.
