All too often we see systems bottlenecked with top-shelf GPUs and/or CPUs paired up with slow and low-capacity RAM, insufficient storage, minimalist motherboards, etc. Now we don’t operate with blinders on and understand that going all in on a system isn’t something everyone can do, even with our financing options via Katapult and Affirm.

How to plan ahead

To this end we look to plan ahead, and we can do this in two ways. Planning for new and upcoming generations of components such as RTX 40 series, Intel 13th gen, AMD Zen4, and more. We can also think about building a system with easy upgrade paths, such as shifting budget towards the Motherboard to support DDR5 RAM as it becomes more readily available, stable, and affordable.

Knowing what you need

They say knowing is half the battle, and with PCs it may be nearly the whole battle. The expectations of a custom PC can vary heavily between users. While most customers are focused on PC gaming, we also create systems for Musicians, DJs, Video editors, Streamers, Game developers, and so much more. We aim to create resources for all these various build styles in the future, but for this article let’s focus on gaming.

Planning a PC for solely gaming can be straightforward as we tend to know exactly what we want to play, or at least the genre. Likewise, games have consistent expectations; smooth high FPS, fast load times, higher resolutions such as 1440p or 4K, plenty of storage, and plenty of ports for peripherals. Gaming PCs are homed in on by the PC building community, with a range of available components from entry level CPUs, GPUs, NVME drives, and more. To the bleeding edge of professional grade top-shelf components such as the brand new RTX 4090, Intel i9-13900K, 6000+ MHz DDR5 RAM, etc.

You don’t need it all at once

Picking your battles is a great way to create a custom build that offers excellent performance, without breaking the bank. As we mentioned earlier, designing a custom gaming PC that shifts focus to components usually thought of as secondary (such as the motherboard) can be a great idea. Some would call this futureproofing, and while that term means different things to everyone, it’s not far from the mark. For example, a motherboard such as a Z690 series has an LGA1700 socket and will allow you to continue using a 12th gen Intel CPU, but also upgrade to a higher performance 13th gen later on if you go looking for that performance bump.

Making it your own

Now that we have an idea of planning ahead, how do we know where to start? Take a look at the recommendations of some of your favorite games. How much storage capacity do they take? What kind of FPS & Resolution do you need to hit? If your catalogue is low on space requirements, shift some budget from storage to something that would impact performance such as the RAM or GPU. Are you playing titles known for having lots of load screens or pop-in? Make sure to try to grab a high-speed SSD such as an M.2 NVMe drive with enough capacity.

These are of course just some general tips, and if you’re looking for more specific information, we recommend checking out some of our other posts focused on builds and components.
