By virtue of this, PC chassis also come framed to fit specific sizes of motherboards to make sure everything matches and fits nicely. Right now, we’re going to focus on Micro ATX, the middle child between Mini ITX and Standard ATX sizes.

Micro ATX is a bit of an oddity in that it aims to possess the best aspects of both the larger Standard ATX, and smaller Mini ITX configurations without sacrificing much. Generally speaking as motherboards get smaller the manufacturer has less space for ports and hardware slots. This can present an issue in the much smaller Mini ITX configurations as they typically only offer up to 2 RAM slots and a single PCIe slot.

Unlike most Mini ITX boards, Micro ATX still normally possess the full suite of hardware slots and ports expected of a gaming rig. With 4 slots for RAM, 2 or more PCIe slots, and a general configuration intended for gaming, you get the full Standard ATX experience in a smaller package.

Which size is for you?

If you’re trying to pack everything into the smallest PC possible, Mini ITX will inevitably be the smallest option of the ones listed here. This comes with the caveats we’ve already mentioned, and potentially an issue installing modern larger GPUs, coolers, etc. If you’re looking to maintain the full-scale performance and components available to a modern gaming rig but keep the form factor smaller, Micro ATX usually is the way to go.

When looking at Micro ATX cases, keeping measurements of various components in mind is still important if you plan to cram in a large GPU, AIO, tons of Fans, etc. However, you shouldn’t run into issues right out the gate as you most likely will with a Mini ITX. Of course if size isn’t an issue, or if you just prefer the general appearance of a full-sized custom gaming PC then Standard or Extended ATX are likely the way to go. With that said, Micro ATX can still provide that same performance, sometimes at a lower cost as the smaller chassis and motherboard can be cheaper to manufacture.

The CLX Scarab Special!

Alright that title is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but the CLX Scarab is our primary Small Form Factor PC loaded with customization options (including a sweet new Teal print design!) And it seemed prudent to use as an example for how truly stacked a Micro ATX build can be. With a Lian-Li 011 Dynamic Mini Chassis, the Scarab can still support an Nvidia RTX 4090 known to be a bit large for a GPU, a 1000 Watt SFX PSU, a full-sized 360mm radiator, and plenty more. Of course, our other systems can be configured to a Micro-ATX setup if so desired, but Scarab is right at home in its exceptionally small but powerful niche.

So, perhaps you’ve been inspired to configure a micro-ATX PC of your own?
