With all of the hype over big name titles, however, there’s a chance you may have missed a few gems. From indie platformers and intriguing point and click adventures to unique RPGs and shooters with a twist, 2021 was nothing if not innovative. The 3 titles we will be featuring below all provide a special twist on an established genre, so if you have been waiting for something different to play, these games should spark your interest. At the end, we will also provide some insight as to our gaming pc builder and why it’s never been easier to get a PC that has the specs you need to play your favorite titles, whether they are obscure indie entries or blockbuster AAA hits.<h2> </h2><h2> </h2><h2>Blue Fire</h2> To start off our list, we have one of the most unique and challenging 3D action platformers to come out on PC in quite some time. Available for download on Steam, this visually pleasing entry by newcomer developer ROBI Studios offers a richly detailed world, satisfying treasure-hunting, and decent Zelda-style combat. Although the game centers around traditional 3D platforming, with unlockable abilities and rather standard combat, where Blue Fire stands out is in some of its other game mechanics, such as its Souls-inspired save system and upgradable equipment. The statues that allow for saving and purchasing of goods act as rest stations in between an ongoing string of harrowing platforming challenges. This is not a game for those who aren’t accustomed to difficult 3D platforming. While there is a lot to love about the core mechanics of Blue Fire, there are moments in the game that will test your patience. Including the fact that you lose your in-game currency upon death, so small mistakes can cost you, and these mistakes can compound and make navigating more difficult areas of the game all the more problematic. However, if you loved Hollow Knight, and are game for a platformer that you won’t be able to simply breeze through, this title will more than keep you occupied. With a slew of Very Positive reviews on Steam and a dedicated community, stunning graphics and fun abilities that feel satisfying to use, you won’t want to pass this game up if you haven’t played it already. It’s also a steal even at full price. <h2> </h2><h2>Griftlands</h2> A truly unique offering from Klei Entertainment, this indie gem is best described as a “roguelike” deck-building RPG that is driven by an engaging story and approachable graphics. The game hinges on its own take of the genre. Rather than have one deck you utilize at any given time, you have to cultivate two separate decks, one for battle and one for “negotiating.” While the complexity of battle doesn’t quite reach Slay The Spire levels, Griftlands does offer an incredibly rich and satisfying experience, with multiple strategies that can be employed for most situations. The obvious visual-novel look of the game is actually spot on, as Griftlands does center around storytelling as one of its main areas of interest. In fact, many of the decisions you make in the game will actually influence the outcome of the story and the path you are on, which adds to the replayability of the title. Coupled with the RPG elements that round out the deck-building quite nicely, and you have the makings of an interesting title that is easy to jump into but might take you some time investment to really wrap your head around. A solid and underrated game all the way around.<h2> </h2><h2> </h2><h2>Oddworld: Soulstorm</h2> This game may not have been a “hidden” gem for you if you are a fan of the classic Oddworld series, or if you have been keeping track of its reimagined version in New ‘n’ Tasty. However, if you don’t follow the series or aren’t a fan of decidedly bizarre 2D side scrollers, you’re in for a treat. For the uninitiated, the original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee followed the tribulations of an Oddworld inhabitant named Abe, who through calculated strategy and dumb luck, rescues his kin from certain doom. The actual game mechanics were incredibly unique and innovative for the time, full of nail-biting stealth missions and interesting platforming feats. In an era where 3D was rising to prominence, Oddworld was an ambitious title that went on to spawn several sequels. Oddworld has recently enjoyed a bit of a resurgence, upon New ‘n’ Tasty’s release. This next entry, Soulstorm, is a reimagining of the original sequel, Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus. You can expect the same difficult puzzles, eye-catching graphics, and laugh-worthy moments, as you  guide Abe past armed guards and around a variety of perilous obstacles. Much like the original, the Oddworld series is defined by having patience and carefully executing through a series of traps and puzzles, and the feeling of relief and reward once you get to the next checkpoint.
