The most obvious sticky point is motherboard and graphic card space, but room for cooling options and airflow is also critical. I tell you, building a small tower PC that is powerful and silent at the same time is a test not fit for the faint of heart. But we were up for the challenge, and also the giggles.

The Components

For our little experiment, we grabbed one of our smallest custom cases: the Scarab Tomahawk. Designed by Razer, we chose this Mini-ITX tower for its compact design and surprisingly large internal space. The Scarab Tomahawk is sturdy, practical, and goes straight to the point, just like a war tank.

The case comes with three SSD internal bays, three expansion slots, two USB 3.0 plus one USB Type-C slot in the front I/O panel, and the signature Razer chroma underglow. The case can house both SFF and SFF-L power supply units, and still provide enough clearance for a big GPU (320mm) and a tall CPU cooler (165mm).

So we fitted in a Gigabyte X570, mostly because we wanted the extra RGB and WIFI capabilities, and we figured we would be overclocking this thing up later on.

For processing, we chose the Ryzen 5 6600X as we think it has enough power to deliver a zippy performance, but we brought up the big guns and fitted an NVIDIA RTX 3080 for good measure.

The installation process was smooth as this small tower PC case makes things pretty easy. Razer furnished this case with a bracket for your AIOs or closed liquid cooling system. We attached our signature CLX Quench 360 radiator to the bracket and dropped it on top of the case. It looks really smooth and flush.

We preemptively installed a 4 TB NVMe M.2 SSD under the motherboard´s heat shield so we don't have to use any of the 3.5-inch bays, maximizing airflow and keeping things tidy.

As expected, everything fits like a glove, literally. All the components are tightly put together, only leaving enough clearance for our screwdrivers. But it all worked out well.

We tested the system and got it running extremely silently when idle, which was incredible given how close the components are to each other in this small tower PC. We started running some tests to get our processors warmed up, and went hard with Prime95 and Furmark to get some readings.

With this configuration, we had the CPU reach 70° and stay there. The GPU sat at 67° for the most part, but it added a few degrees to our CPU, locating it at 75°, which was amazing considering the restricted airflow.

In terms of noise, we turned fans all the way up and things got a bit loud, with noise levels hitting 55dB. However, no amount of load was able to send all fans into a craze. Even under heavy stress, the system stayed below 45dB and sat comfortably at 30dB when idle, which is almost inaudible with headphones on.

In terms of performance, we spent a few hours playing Apex Legends at 1440p and were able to keep FPS way beyond 120 without the PC making any noticeable noise. Grand Theft Auto V ran at 90FPS comfortably using the same resolution, and the Elden Rings never looked so beautiful.

The Verdict

I believe the time for bulky full tower PCs just to play your favorite games on ultra settings is coming to an end. There are still many uses for high-end rigs with top-of-the-line components and dual GPUs. But newer chip architectures are making it possible to pack a small tower PC with more power than you´ll ever need and remain competitive no matter your game.

Granted that there have been some reviews out there from people complaining about this particular case not having enough space for cable management, but that's what happens when things are done by people who don't build gaming PCs for a living. All of our rigs have their wire act together while looking amazing on the inside.

One other common complaint is the front intake filter being too restrictive, potentially causing a case of negative pressure. We have tested these filters giving them everything we have, and there has never been a problem with airflow. The front intake filters work like a dream.

If you want to know more about small tower PC builds, contact our team directly and we´ll answer all your questions or build an incredible rig for you in no time.

","id":"p0","sort_index":0,"type":"paragraph"}],"mid_image_path":"small-tower-pcs-mid.jpg","sid":"pc-parts-benchmark","small_image_path":"small-tower-pcs-small.jpg","sub_title":"I know this sounds like a self-serving blog post from a cocky gaming PC manufacturer, but I promise it's not the case here, so hear me out.","title":"There Is NOTHING our Small Tower PCs Can´t Do"}
