What's not to like?

The acclaimed publisher claims that their latest single or demo volume, as they call it, is just a symbol of what's to come in the full album. Let me tell you that this teaser does not disappoint. After our five-hour straight session on our small gaming PC, we're confident the full version will be as promised: all-killer-no-filler.

Wolfstride takes us to a civilization where gladiatorial games are all the rage, but this time we cheer and boo for giant metal beasts that enter the arena for fame and riches. Kind of like the movie Reel Steel, but with Gundam suits.

The graphic style is a crossbreed between old-school 2D pixel art and extremely detailed, black and white manga drawings. The game is incredibly gorgeous, with slick hand-drawn characters and minutely detailed backgrounds brimming with nods to the Japanese mecha-manga universe.

You can see the graphic department was given free rein when designing characters, backgrounds, and even menu items. We were impressed right at the start when we saw that each one of the moves available for my mecha had its own graphic style, each taken from different movie or comic genres.

As usual, we start right at the bottom of the food chain in the mecha fighting world. Our starting mech and team have seen better days. The parts and gear available will give you a general idea of how fit you are for the next encounter. Items like “lousy shielding” and “trash plate” pretty much describe what we have at hand right before being tossed into the ring against an intimidating opponent whose only objective is to beat us to a pulp.

So it is our job to win fights and earn some money to start upgrading our warrior, to put it in better fighting shape.

A bit of a warning here: the game´s language and gore levels are over the top on this one, so expect a lot of sailor talk and liberal use of French words. However, it is all in good spirit and many of the jokes are hilarious.

The game does not offer any sort of tutorial before entering the ring. All the advice you get is to punch your opponent in the chest until it falls. However, the GUI layout is weirdly intuitive. If you have played turn-based fighting games in the past, you will be able to get the gist right out of the gate at the first turn.

The strategy during the few fights available in the demo revolves around efficiently managing Move Points for positioning or pushing your enemy around, Action Points for attacking or using special skills, and Ammo, which we hope is self-explanatory. The arena is represented by a row of 7 tiles which give us our relative position in the ring. Attacks will have a certain range, and you gain momentum as you move towards your enemy for added damage. During a battle, mechas are pushed back and forth, gaining momentum for more powerful attacks or getting cornered for extra punishment.

Target your opponent's head to reduce its action skills, its arms to prevent it from attacking, or the chest to disable it and win the fight.

Landing combos and taking advantage of momentum to increase damage does feel satisfactory for a while, as you focus on punching through your opponent's torso. However, after a few battles, we were left wondering if the complete version of the game would offer more combat depth, like the ability to circle around your opponent for a sneak attack, or the possibility to attack more sections of the body for added strategy. We fear that the combat aspect of the game would suffer from repetitiveness if they don´t spice things up on that front.

The game´s uniqueness does not stop at fancy battles and incredibly stylized manga drawings. Wolfstride puts a lot of meat on the bones for those who like minigames and story-based adventures. Our team leader, a former Yakuza, has a lot to do between fights. Right after each fight, we get to control this shady character.

He can repair our robot, purchase upgrades, or go around the city to meet locals, make friends, and find odd jobs to help in the efforts to make our mecha the biggest most badass warrior there is.

The graphic style helps set the mood, giving the story an old-school pulp fiction comic book vibe that constantly alternates between mysterious and comical, without ever feeling too heavy-handed. The story offers a few twists and turns and slowly helps flesh out the characters to a point where you feel sympathetic to their cause. We soon found a few job offers that turned out to be minigames that let you collect parts and money in clever and fun ways.

The demo offers surprisingly high replayability value. We beat it in half an hour, and we kept coming back to try new strategies and beat our score at the minigames.

Can My Small Gaming PC Run Wolfstride?

The indie nature of Wolfstride makes the game extremely accessible for everyone. The demo works flawlessly on our small form factor PCs and gaming laptops. This is good news for the indie gaming community that focuses on substance over graphics, as they won´t have any problem trying Wolfstride the way the devs intended.

We do recommend playing it with good headphones on. The music and sounds are top-notch, and they really help you get immersed in this bizarre yet exciting new world.

The full version will be available on Steam on December 7.
","id":"p0","sort_index":0,"type":"paragraph"}],"mid_image_path":"wolfstride-mid.jpg","sid":"pc-gaming-esports-news","small_image_path":"wolfstride-small.jpg","sub_title":"\nLast month, we were treated to an amazing game demo for an upcoming game called Wolfstride","title":"A Small Peek Into Wolfstride: The Latest Manga Mech RPG Title"}
