For some, CoD represents the gold standard of the first-person shooter genre, with a library of awesome titles to fall back on, of which only a handful could be considered flops.

It only makes sense that developer Activision would try its hand at crafting the best battle royale as well, with the slick and satisfying multiplayer action fans love set in the framework of this new heart-pounding game format.

Activision’s first attempt at a BR, Call of Duty: Blackout, just didn’t meet the mark. Although it had an initial surge of attention, the title was uninspiring and brought nothing new to the table in terms of the battle royale genre. However, Warzone changed all that.

With a long list of innovations such as the second-chance arena known as the Gulag, being able to obtain premade loadouts and switch them up mid-match, a well-implemented in-game currency system that allows you to purchase powerful but balanced items, unlimited parachute redeploy, an extremely diverse loot pool, and a satisfying TTK, Call of Duty: Warzone was instantly a hit with fans of BR and FPS games in general.

Despite all of these innovations however, the title is not without its issues. Fans have been clamoring for new content, and with a much-anticipated new season having just dropped, it would appear that Activision has delivered. We’ll be taking a deep dive into all of the recent changes, and help you get in on the action with our pick for the best CLX gaming PC for Warzone fans.

Why Warzone Was Long Overdue For Big Changes

Regular updates are expected with the “games as a service” format. Like all battle royale games, Warzone has received numerous small updates over the past year, with new game modes, balance tweaks, and events to keep fans occupied and justify the cost of the battle pass.

However, there is a lot of stiff competition here, with games like Fortnite and Apex Legends offering a ton of great content on their battle passes, along with meaty updates that are typically bursting with fresh content. Despite cornering the market on some of the genre’s best new gameplay mechanics and arguably the best BR loot system to date, the game has been rather thin on new content compared to its competition.

You might say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” and in Warzone’s case, this philosophy would have had some merit, were it not for the fact that many fans have considered the game broken for weeks, based off of a few small updates that have occurred since the start of the year.

With much of the playerbase impatient for new content and another contingent of fans upset over the recent domination of certain meta-bending guns (most notably the Sykov akimbo class, as well as certain FFAR 1 loadouts), a true update was almost a necessity.

The game, while popular, simply hadn’t had a large update in some time. No substantial map updates, no big changes to the meta, and plenty of other great games to choose from. For Warzone to stay on top as the best BR in town, it would need a decent refresh.

Taking it Back to the 80’s

Over the past couple of weeks, Activision has hinted at what was to come. With outbreaks of zombies popping up all over the map and hints at a nuclear event, it would seem as though Call of Duty: Cold War Season 3 would bring with it some much-needed changes to Warzone as well.

One of the biggest changes to come with Season 3 has been a massive and long-awaited map change. Although there was some speculation as to an entirely new map, it turns out that we have been transported back in time. To the 80’s no less.

At first glance, it might appear as though not much has changed on Verdansk. However, with this new 80’s themed map comes quite a few POI changes, and even a few brand new locations to explore.

Immediately noticeable is that the Stadium POI has been reverted to being under construction. This is significant because what was once a fairly popular and arena-like location is now more open and will play out differently as a hot drop.

The dam region, Gora Summit, has also been given a substantial amount of work, as it now appears to be a bridge spanning a dry wooded area, with new buildings to explore. As the dam was one of the most problematic areas of the map, especially late game when the circle would close in on players while they were at the bottom of the massive dam wall, this change is mostly going to be well-received.

Other interesting changes include a towering radar array that can be scaled and used as a dynamic form of high-ground in an otherwise flat location. This area will clearly be another power position that players will seek to hold down in late game situations, not unlike the Prison, although the towers do leave players somewhat exposed.

The Airport has also been reverted to an intact state, making this area somewhat more threatening as a location to explore. Without a heartbeat sensor or proper intel, it may be difficult to navigate this massive complex without the promise of an easy exit.

One of the most impressive new locations replaces one of the old map’s most bland areas. The Salt Mine, formally the Quarry, is now a true POI with plenty of structures to explore. The ever-popular Superstore has also seen some changes, sporting a new 1984 look and feel as well.

While it’s not a completely new map, the significant degree of changes paired with the familiarity of popular and loved locales will provide players with the best of both worlds. The 80’s aesthetic doesn’t hurt, either.

Much-Needed Balance Changes

For many fans of the game, it’s not the map that needed an overhaul, but the weapons. In recent weeks, a litany of complaints have surfaced regarding the state of the game, most of them critical. The aforementioned Sykov pistols, along with guns like the AUG and FFAR 1, have turned what should be a diverse and healthy meta into a stagnant nightmare with absurd TTK and un-fun gameplay all around.

What made the advent of the Sykov akimbo pistols absolutely lethal is that these weapons are considered secondary, which meant that players could effectively get the most broken loadout in Warzone history without even having to go for two supply drops. While some variation was still present with loadout preferences, the vast bulk of players were running the same guns, especially in the higher tiers of play.

This new season of Warzone has finally addressed some of the lingering issues with many of the game’s most overused guns. Even better, Activision buffed several underperforming guns, including the Cold War AK-47 and FARA 83.

It remains to be seen what the effects to the meta will be, but the initial results seem promising. While the Sykov akimbo pistols are still a respectable choice, they aren’t the end all be all. Neither is the FFAR 1, which now sees viable competition with the Groza and Krig-6.

Two new Cold War guns, the PPSh-41 SMG and Swiss K31 sniper rifle have also appeared on the scene. The only gripe some players have when it comes to the new loot pool is Activision’s choice to remove all Modern Warfare guns, which are now only obtainable via your loadout.

With a few other changes, such as buffs to the underwhelming Pelington 703, and an array of attachment alterations, as well as changes to the behavior of thermite grenades, it would seem as though Warzone is headed in the right direction from a balance point of view. The fact that Activision heard so many of the playerbase’s complaints and addressed them in a reasonable manner is a good indication that the game will have staying power. The better the balance of the game is and the more it rewards tactical and skillful play, the better it will be able to sustain a thriving playerbase.

Other Important Tweaks Worth Noting

These haven’t been the only pain points for Warzone in recent memory. For instance, many players have wanted Activision to address the Roze skin, a contentious issue to say the least. This skin was a favorite among hardcore players who would use it for its ability to blend in with shadows almost too well. In the latest patch, it would seem that the skin has received subtle changes that make it less advantageous.

With other additions such as the new melee baseball bat weapon and fan-favorite game modes coming back, it would appear as though new life has been breathed into Warzone. As popular as ever and showing no signs of slowing down, this is the game to get into if you are looking for a satisfying PC gaming experience that is fun, rewarding, and competitive.

Is it Too Late to Get Into Warzone?

For gamers that love the fast-paced gunplay and strategic action of Warzone, it doesn’t look like the game is going anywhere any time soon. While the prospect of going up against players who have already been duking it out on Verdansk for a year might seem intimidating, the game itself is based on the rock-solid Call of Duty framework and is arguably one of the easiest battle royales to pick up in terms of gameplay mechanics.

However, to give yourself the best possible shot at competing and enjoying the game to its fullest, you’re going to want to make sure your PC can handle the challenge. Warzone matches play out on a massive map featuring incredibly detailed environments, with 150 players total battling it out to be the last one standing. It’s not a game you want to play on a low-end PC, to say the least.

Warzone is not all that different from any other modern FPS game from a AAA studio. You need a gaming desktop that allows you to play at smooth frame rates at a great resolution, for long periods of time without risk of overheating your PC components or running out of memory. While it’s never too late to get acquainted with a game like Warzone, or revisit it after a long hiatus, playing the game at less than optimal settings will likely yield a poor experience.

As of right now the recommended system requirements for Call of Duty: Warzone include the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or 1660, Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD Ryzen R5 1600X, and 12 GB of memory. While these aren’t earth-shattering specs, they do reflect the fact that Warzone is one of the most resource-intensive titles out right now and if you want to really experience the game how it was meant to be played, and keep up with the game as it evolves as well, you need a gaming computer that offers more than enough power.

A high-performance CLX gaming PC equipped with industry-leading components will allow you to dive into Verdansk ready to take on the leaderboards.
