And while this isn’t the very first attempt at making a game based around the blockbuster hit, it’s certainly the first worth a deeper look.</p><p><br></p><p><br data-mce-bogus='1'></p><p>Ubisoft, working along with Disney and Lightstorm Entertainment, are putting together what could be an incredible gaming experience in <em>Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora</em>. <a href='https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeYKoPqkTIg' data-mce-href='https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeYKoPqkTIg'>Teased at E3</a>, not much has been leaked or dropped about the game to this point, but what we do know is tantalizing to say the least.</p><h2><br data-mce-bogus='1'></h2><h2><br data-mce-bogus='1'></h2><h2>Looking Back at <em>Avatar</em></h2><p><br data-mce-bogus='1'></p><p>For those who are a bit foggy about the details regarding the Movie <em>Avatar</em> and only remember tall blue humanoids on a faraway planet, it’s worth revisiting the film to see just why it has the potential to translate well into a video game.</p><p><br></p><p><br data-mce-bogus='1'></p><p>The general plot of the movie was not anything revolutionary, but helped to set the tone well. In the not-too-distant future humans have colonized a moon of a distant planet, known as Pandora, which is full of natural resources, including a special mineral (dubbed unobtainium) that fetches a high price.</p><p><br></p><p><br data-mce-bogus='1'></p><p>Rather than brute force their way toward obtaining these natural resources, the militarized band of humans created the Avatar Program in order to essentially infiltrate the local humanoid cultures, learn their ways, and work with them in a kind of partnership. Ultimately, this partnership is one-sided because it involves convincing these natives to leave their land so that it can be pillaged.</p><p><br></p><p><br data-mce-bogus='1'></p><p>The hallmark concept of the movie was the ability for humans to inhabit alien bodies, by “downloading” their consciousness into the new body. With obvious <em>Matrix</em> vibes, the concept nonetheless was dynamic and led our protagonist to integrate himself into the world of Pandora’s native Na’vi tribes. At a certain point, he realizes the mission he was sent on was not only futile, but destructive, and winds up siding with them in what ultimately becomes a war against the human occupation.</p><p><br></p><p><br data-mce-bogus='1'></p><p>Based on what we see in the teaser for <em>Frontiers of Pandora</em>, it looks like many of the familiar elements of the movie will be making a return. This is welcome because while the plot of <em>Avatar</em> was serviceable enough, many would agree that where the movie shined the most was in the world itself. Pandora was a true feast for the eyes, featuring impossibly colorful flora and fauna, breathtaking floating mountains, and a night sky that was truly otherworldly. With plenty of fantasy elements, room for first person shooter action complements of the military occupation, and a world that many of us have wanted to explore for a decade now, it only makes sense that the entire thing would be repackaged as a video game.</p><h2><br data-mce-bogus='1'></h2><h2><br data-mce-bogus='1'></h2><h2>Not Your Typical Movie Tie-In</h2><p><br data-mce-bogus='1'></p><p>Unlike many video games that are based on movies, it does not seem as though <em>Frontiers of Pandora</em> is going to force the player to relive the exact events of 2009’s <em>Avatar</em>. Instead, this is looking like an open-world adventure game that will likely expand far beyond the borders of the familiar story.</p><p><br></p><p><br data-mce-bogus='1'></p><p>This makes perfect sense given the magnificent world of Pandora and what it offers from a game world perspective. Though the movie gave us all a glimpse of this strange alien world, many would agree that it wasn’t nearly enough. Especially in the latter parts of the movie when the idea of different countries or territories was introduced, each populated by different Na’vi tribes. Viewers were only given a taste of the possibilities.</p><p><br></p><p><br data-mce-bogus='1'></p><p>The setting for the game essentially writes itself.
