There are websites, world leader boards, and even massive events that raise funds for charity around this hobby.

However, many insist that speedrunning robs games of their fun. The most common argument against it is that those dedicated to shattering world records never pay attention to the story or attention to detail that is put into the games by developers.

There is a problem, though. If this was true, then we could extrapolate the same reasoning to a lot of other disciplines. For example, there have always been people who want to become the fastest guitar players in the world and they post videos of themselves going through scales using the whole fretboard at blazingly fast speeds. They might not be making music, but they help others have a better understanding of fingering techniques so they can apply them to their own songs. The same thing happens with Olympic athletes. I don´t think these superhuman individuals go through exhausting training routines and demanding body conditioning for years just to have fun during the Olympics.

Speedrunning is just a competitive way of playing games not by recurring to the usual suspension of disbelief, but by understanding the core mechanics of a game in a way that allows you to create shortcuts. The difference between speedrunning and cheating or hacking is that you are only permitted to use the code the developers created without modifying it. The laws of physics and guardrails they write are never perfect, so speedrunners spend a lot of time trying to find these imperfections and see how these interact with other mechanics.

So, in a way, the devs themselves create opportunities for their games to be exploited.

It might come as a surprise that speedrunning kind of follows the principles of the scientific method. Most speedrunning starts with people playing the game and finding weird glitches. They share their findings with the community, and soon hordes of players will try to replicate the experiment to confirm it. That means that every trick or record out there is the result of years of small incremental discoveries shared by this huge and open community.

Moreover, speedrunning isn´t just about skipping game content. There are many speedrunning categories. The two most popular are “100%” and “Any%”. The first one requires players to complete every level and max out every measurable stat (coins, stars, enemies killed) the game considers important. In contrast, Any% allows you to break the game in any way, form, or shape, to reach the credits scene as fast as possible. Here is where all the craziness happens, and millions of viewers enjoy the hilarity of the bugs and glitches shown by Any% speedrunners.

Should Developers Prevent Speedrunning?

Some say that developers should push the release of their games until they´re glitch-free. Unfortunately, that´s an impossible task that would make studios go inevitably bankrupt. I´m not defending studios that release clearly incomplete titles with bugs that make their games unplayable for most. But let's think about it for a second.

Every hour between conception and release costs money. Early releases allow fans to partially fund the game in its initial state and contribute with valuable feedback that helps publishers to continue polishing their titles. Moreover, given the complex nature of modern games, there is no way developers can test their code for the literally infinite amount of gaming PC configurations without the help of millions of gamers actively trying to find weak spots in every corner. So, pushing release dates indefinitely would actually add even more delays.

With the help of customer feedback, the most egregious glitches are usually fixed within weeks. However, some studios like to acknowledge some errors as they rarely get in the way of players, and add an extra layer of exploration for those who like to do speedruns or just want to create fun content for their streaming sessions. Other studios are known for leaving glitches but punish players for exploiting them or even treating them with extra content.

I have come to appreciate their love for gaming as they definitely play a huge part in keeping many old titles alive, providing endless replayability to games that would otherwise be quickly forgotten, and giving yet another use to their gaming PCs online.

If you appreciate video games and any of the different ways there are to enjoy them, you need a machine that allows you to play your favorite games the way the devs intended. Build a high-end Gaming PC online today by using our intuitive custom PC builder and take your gaming experience to the next level.
","id":"p0","sort_index":0,"type":"paragraph"}],"id":"_jtwf0d4h5","mid_image_path":"speed-running-mid.jpg","sid":"pc-gaming-esports-news","small_image_path":"speed-running-small.jpg","sub_title":"Many of us remember the Nintendo World Championship with deep nostalgia.","title":"Are Speedrunners Ruining Gaming?"}
