Having played X-Morph, we instantly recognized the tower-defense/shooter aspects of that old game. To their credit, the graphics were extremely well executed and we soon saw why AMD chose The Riftbreaker for its fourth Partner Showcase episode. Their proprietary Schmetterling 2.0 engine runs smoothly with an uncapped frame rate that never disappoints.

The premise is also attractive enough to get gamers interested. Earth is in danger and humankind needs a new planet to colonize, and Galatea 37 seems like a suitable candidate.

You are a scientist/commando inside a mech-suit able to sustain the harsh environmental conditions of this new world. You are tasked to travel to Galatea 37, erect a self-sustainable base, collect samples, and gather enough resources to power a massive rift that will allow our colonization forces to arrive.

The story felt a bit contradictory at times, though. The game lectures the user with stories about renewable energies and environmentalism, while you ride an extinction-level murderbot that makes the bad guys from Avatar look like bleeding heart tree huggers.

The game tutorial soon showed us that the game was about to give us a lot more than we bargained for. Within the first 3 minutes, you immediately learn how to build a base, gather resources, set a defensive perimeter, and fight off massive quantities of bugs on a planet with an ecosystem that is not happy with you being there at all. Your mission is to literally wipe out entire jungles and everything that lives in them mercilessly, and then use their smoking remains to power a complex machine that will bring even more of your friends. Very satisfying premise if you ask me.

The Riftbreaker Gameplay

One positive aspect of the game is that it never feels it is taking you by the hand while you are learning the ropes. It places you right in harm's way, and you have to pay attention to your boss who sounds like he's already had enough of our failures. It sounds harsh, but it provides enough motivation for you to prove you´re not going to ruin it this time around. The campaign acts like a well-paced tutorial so you never feel overwhelmed with information and responsibilities as you zip around the planet putting out fires, building defenses, and taking down swarms of bugs that often make Zerg rushes feel like a walk in the park. Overall, it provides a very satisfactory experience that allows you to try very different approaches depending on your preferred playstyle.

A minor complaint is that it often feels like the game does not know what it should focus on. In an attempt to build a balanced experience, the game constantly tells you that you should drop whatever you are doing, and focus on something else. Sometimes you´re figuring out how to strengthen your power grid, and your exosuit tells you you need to go find more resources. You are trying to clear a vile nest of acid-spitting creatures, and you get an urgent notification about your base energy running low.

However, we soon sensed that the game was designed to let players focus on the aspect they liked the best. Those with a passion for building complex industries a-la-Factorio can definitely put all their attention towards base building and resource allocation. Fans of hack and slash games can spend most of their time exploring the gorgeous maps and take care of the incredibly diverse dangers Galatea 37 offers. The game is forgiving enough to let you try different approaches without punishing your progress in any significant way. This makes it ideal for casual players who just want to find an addictive time sink that does not force them to turn any particular activity into a grind.

However, if you are looking for a real challenge, the campaign might not be your thing. If that´s the case, the game offers a sandbox and survival mode that lets you create challenges with almost infinite levels of difficulty.

Moreover, EXO Studio announced their World Expansion I will come out in March or April, and they listened to fans who clamored for an online multiplayer feature, which will give this game an unbelievable replayability value. We should expect the multiplayer version by the end of the year, according to EXO Studio.

A word about performance. While The Riftbreaker is a very well-optimized game, it feels the developers got a bit greedy with level and enemy design in some sections. For example, there is an acid yeast colony plant that can take over your entire map very quickly, and it will also start mowing down your FPS and CPU performance if you are not prepared for it. We hope the guys at EXO get around that and optimize this aspect of the game soon. For now, the only way around it is to kill the colony as fast as possible before it eats out your CPU power, I mean, your map.

Do you need a high-performance gaming PC to run The RiftBreaker?

Definitely. The graphics department spared no expenses when designing a gorgeous yet dangerous world, and watching the contrast between the lush native life forms clashing against the technological wonders you build is worth every penny. So, you need a high-performance gaming PC that can deliver those precious FPS without a problem. Here at CLX, we make it as easy as possible to build high-end personal computers for gaming so you can experience The Riftbreaker the way the devs intended.

In short, The Riftbreaker is a hack and slash, base building, survival game, with RPG, tower defense, and bullet hell elements, that will keep you playing for days at a time. Fans of the different genres will recognize these elements. However, the way they are combined offers incredibly unique challenges no other titles can offer. 100% recommended.
","id":"p0","sort_index":0,"type":"paragraph"}],"mid_image_path":"rift-breaker-mid.jpg","sid":"pc-gaming-esports-news","small_image_path":"rift-breaker-small.jpg","sub_title":"Today, most new titles can feel like a rehash of older concepts.","title":"The RiftBreaker: An Homage To Old Genres Or A Groundbreaking Experience?"}
