We covered some of these intriguing changes here in our coverage of BlizzCon 2021. These changes include new maps, different hero passive abilities, and “changes” to the way the characters themselves play, according to the development team.

If you are an Overwatch fan and are interested in learning more about what’s in store for the franchise, this quick overview of some of the recent announcements will get you up to speed. For aspiring pros, we will also highlight why a custom and prebuilt gaming PC might be a smart investment if you want to get the most out of this fast-paced FPS once it finally drops.

A Key Change to Team Structure

Out of everything that we have learned about Overwatch 2 at this point, no other change is perhaps so significant, and so controversial as this. Overwatch 2 will be switching from 6v6 gameplay to 5v5.

For those who are new to the franchise, this might seem like a small change to have to adapt to.However, Overwatch has been around for quite some time, and by now, the old way of doing things is pretty much ingrained in everyone’s head. Pro teams, for instance, are completely structured around the 6v6 format.

By switching to 5v5, it effectively disrupts the entire team dynamic that has been built up over the years. The devs claim that this change is to help simplify the gameplay, which is understandable. One of the things Overwatch was notable for was the pandemonium of most matches. With such blazingly fast action going on from start to finish, keeping track of 12 players was quite a feat. With two fewer combatants per map, it could reduce visual clutter and make the game more strategic.

Smaller-sized teams in competitive shooters have been popular for years. CS;GO and Valorant both utilize a 5v5 team structure. Battle Royale games have never gone beyond 4v4 squads, and as of late have preferred 3v3 and duo competitions above everything else. To put it mildly, 6v6 is a bit much, and the devs recognize this.

That doesn’t mean the choice comes without pushback, however. Long-time fans of the franchise, especially professional players, are roiled by the change. The most obvious problem is that well-established teams will essentially have to “boot” someone, which is never easy.

Another issue is that this decision dramatically changes the meta. Along with this announcement comes the news that each team will be restricted to only 1 tank. This will fundamentally change how the game is played.

There are very real concerns over how centralizing this will make the tank role, and may mean that one tank will rise to the top of the meta and be played on each team, thus ruining some of the variance in the gameplay. To combat this, Blizzard has said that the role of the tanks in general will shift somewhat, as they will be more proactive and aggressive.

Likely, this will mean that tanks which are less effective (Winston?) at actually protecting the team will be counterbalanced by the fact that they can contribute in an offensive manner. While the details of these abilities and gameplay changes have yet to be seen, the community is somewhat uneasy about such a core part of the gameplay experience being changed.

What Does This Mean For The Franchise?

Although the changes to team structure and the new role that tanks could play within a team dynamic are rather significant, there’s no reason to think that this will spell doom for the franchise. On the contrary, everything we have seen from Blizzard’s upcoming shooter look quite promising.

In order to feel fresh and compete with the long list of other popular competitive titles that are out right now, it is obvious that Overwatch 2 would have to bring something new to the table. The idea that it would just be a rehash of the first game has long been dispelled anyway, as one of the core reasons that a sequel is coming out to begin with is that the devs didn’t want to continue altering the first game year after year.

Rather than small changes, Blizzard seems to have a fresh vision for the kind of gameplay experience that Overwatch 2 will offer. While the game does have big shoes to fill, it would appear that the goal is to make the game more streamlined, strategic, and approachable for new and returning players alike.

Make Sure You Can Compete

Though we have no solid release date to go off of, we do know one thing about Overwatch 2: you’re going to need a quality gaming computer to handle this title. With stunning graphics and the same frenzied action, this “next gen” version of Overwatch is going to require a suitably next gen gaming PC in order to run at the optimal settings.

Whether you are a casual Overwatch fan who just wants to jump into a few games every night and play with friends without experiencing any hiccups or stutters, or if you are a long-time Overwatch pro ready to get back into the action with your team (minus one of course!), it’s important to have a computer that will be able to handle this game without any issues.

","id":"p0","sort_index":0,"type":"paragraph"},{"alt":"clx-gaming-pc","content":"clx-gaming-pc.jpg","id":"img1","sort_index":1,"type":"image"},{"content":"

Here at CLX we offer a great selection of custom and prebuilt gaming PCs that will enable you to play Overwatch 2 or any of your favorite titles for that matter.
