It all looked beautiful and ran as smoothly as we expected.

Were we impressed?

Not really.

The graphics were amazing, and many of the building models were actually quite beautiful. Don´t get us wrong, we do. But that wasn't it.

After asking some of our friends in the industry we realized we needed to put on a pair of developer goggles to be able to see what the fuss is about. We played the demo again with a few friends who told us where to look and we were totally blown away by what we discovered.

So, let's go over some of the details most people seem to miss about The Matrix Awakening Demo.

Secrets Of Unreal Engine 5

Some of the best features that UE5 brings to the table might get lost in the action when you're being chased by relentless agents that can dodge bullets and jump off from moving cars with uncanny accuracy.

It was difficult to focus on the shadows of objects while trying to stay alive, but a paused frame revealed how Lumen, the engine´s illumination system, was able to follow a flying agent and represent his reflection on the hood of a car that was spinning after its tires exploded. All of that in real-time.

The system adds layers of photo-realism to your game as you can see objects on the streets reflected in almost every surface, no matter how far away they are. Hardware-accelerated Lumen brings new levels of ray tracing accuracy to an environment filled to the brim with reflective surfaces. We couldn't have enough of it and walked around the city just to find new instances of light diffusion and reflections. We were never disappointed.

Then, we turned our eyes towards textures. The engine uses a technology called Nanite. It is a virtualized micro polygon geometry system. UE5 devs assure us that Nanite can handle orders of magnitude more triangles than last generation engines without missing a beat in terms of speed.

We could put that to the test by flying over the city just to see how many objects could the engine render simultaneously. We were amazed by the sheer amount of cars rendered in the streets, all looking amazing without making a dent in performance. This is a huge step for ambitious developers who want to flesh out their open-world games with hundreds or thousands of vehicles or people.

Doing the Superman thing around the city allowed us to experience how the Nanite technology can create a really stable world. We didn't catch any texture pop-ins on the horizon, and all the structures seemed completely rendered, even when observed from miles away. That was a first for us, as we could now feel that we were in a complete world and not some pre-loaded section of it.

Epic Games revealed that they focused heavily on automation, which will free up resources that can be used on world-building and storytelling. Technically, you can let Nanite do all the heavy lifting while freeing the hands of designers to go wild with creativity. Unreal Engine 5 allows devs to procedurally create environments without having to digitally create each asset. You can now just give the engine a series of parameters, and let it populate spaces with the assets you provide it.

Quixel´s megascan massive library is now free and open, and you can access it directly from the engine. Devs are now able to open Bridge directly from UE5, and drag and drop assets into your project at a cost of free. Nanite´s power also liberates processing resources so you can use the film version of megascans, where even small boulders contain millions of triangles, instead of lower quality game-grade assets. The engine´s procedural creation gives you the ability to auto-populate thousands of square miles with ease by just providing a few parameters and it will still look mind-blowing and unique.

UE5´s Temporal Super-Resolution allows designers to create sharper images in 4K resolution at the cost of 1080p. This image reconstruction technique renders fewer pixels but temporarily increases the visible pixel count up to 4K. It is a cool solution as it is difficult to guarantee native 4K using UE5 on consoles, but it gets nowhere near DLSS upscaling technology. We are certain this demo would look way better on a high performance gaming PC.

One thing we noticed is that, even with the engine´s optimized performance, the rendering quality did come at a cost of FPS. A 4K UE5 game running at 60Hz without making important cutbacks requires a lot more juice than what last-gen consoles can dish out. The Matrix Awakens demo runs at 30 FPS, even on last-generation consoles. In a world where most titles are expected to run at 60 frames or more, UE5 might end up forcing publishers to lower their expectations at least until the next generation of consoles comes out. Gamers today are more than used to playing games running at a constant 60FPS. Forced to go back to 30FPS on last-gen consoles just because UE5 exists will feel like a slap in the face for many.

However, this new engine spells good news for modern gaming. Unreal Engine 5 promises a future where small studios will be able to deliver photorealistic and immersive games at a fraction of the cost. However, these games will likely be directed at the gaming computers market, potentially rendering consoles obsolete sooner than anticipated.

Of course, we´re speculating here. It is true that we still have to see an Unreal Engine 5 game running at 60Hz, but that may happen sooner on PC than in last-gen consoles.

If you want to be prepared for the next generation of games, you need to get yourself a high performance gaming PC that´s equipped with enough processing power to run native 4K resolutions without sacrificing FPS rates.
