In the process, you scavenge for loot, strengthen yourself with various items, and position yourself for the advantage through map awareness, wits, and calculated aggression.

Despite the appeal of the battle royale format, many gamers would agree that the genre has become somewhat stale over the years. This is not for lack of innovation, of course. Many games have tried and failed to recapture that feeling of newness and fun that the early days of H1Z1, PUBG, and Fortnite possessed.

It’s not to say that there are no longer any great games to choose from when it comes to entertaining battle royales. Fortnite is just as strong as ever, if not a bit overly competitive. PUBG has made numerous changes as of late and offers a much more rewarding and polished experience than it did at the peak of its hype. Apex Legends is still growing and Call of Duty: Warzone is still one of the most popular games out at the moment.

However, there just seems to be something missing from the genre that hasn’t been felt in a while, and this is a sentiment that is continuously echoed by popular streamers and good chunks of the playerbases as well.

An upcoming title known simply as Grit has the gaming world talking, as it shows initial promise as an exciting new take on BR. Featuring colorful graphics, an old west setting, and 3rd person action ala Fortnite or Realm Royale, this new contender has the framework to be a hit, but can it deliver? Below we’ll take a look at what we known about Grit to date, and provide some insight into what the genre needs in order to recapture some of the magic.

What Stands Out About Grit

First, let’s dive into Grit and why it has the potential to take off. As Fortnite proved so decisively, you don’t need realism or traditional game mechanics in order to rise to popularity in the battle royale genre. At a time when the gritty realism and skill-based gunplay of PUBG seemed to encapsulate what BR was all about, Fortnite swooped in and offered a completely different kind of experience predicated on two things: fun game mechanics and a new kind of skill gap.

The building aspect of Fortnite leveled the playing field and allowed a large and multifaceted playerbase to develop. While some of the skills from games like PUBG and traditional shooters like Call of Duty and Halo carried over to this new BR, for the most part Fortnite required a brand new set of skills that revolved around building. This meant that even seasoned gaming veterans were reduced to square one, having to learn a brand new way to play that helped to create a large and thriving community where everyone, for the most part, was on somewhat even ground.

It’s this desire for a new skill gap and fun mechanics that have gamers patiently waiting for the next big thing. Several games have attempted to recreate this perfect storm, only to be met with moderate success or all-out rebuke. Realm Royale is the perfect example of a game that experienced a short surge of stardom and was loved for its Fortnite-like feel with a high skill-gap and fun looting system, among other things. After a few balance changes and overhauls, the spirit of the game changed drastically and was never the same again.

Other titles have come and gone in similar fashion, and while others have carved out some success, most would agree that they still lack a unique skill gap or mechanics.

This is where Grit shows some promise, as it certainly has the framework of a new and exciting skill gap predicated on a unique perk system. Rather than simply trying to find the highest tier guns because you know they will be more powerful, weapons will carry both a rarity and a card suit, the latter of which can stack with weapons of a similar suit. For instance, weapons with the “heart” perk allow you to heal quicker, and if you have enough of these heart-perk weapons in your inventory, this healing effect will be carried over to your teammates.

This kind of strategic looting system would allow players to create classes on the fly or drop classes as the situation warrants, based on the specific weapons in your inventory. Along with some of the other mechanics that have been revealed as the game gets closer to launch, it would appear that at first glance, the game could take off.

Here are just a few of the interesting features and elements you will find in Grit:

Total wild west setting. Guns and items are all based on a western motif. Don’t expect futuristic weaponry or fantasy elements.

Mobility is largely based around horseback riding, and gunplay on horseback would appear to be a key gameplay element.

You can apparently stash items on horses for additional inventory, a vehicle mechanic many have been asking for in just about every major battle royale.

Features a 1 vs 1 “second chance” mechanic for eliminated players akin to Warzone’s “gulag.”

Has a healing system reminiscent of PUBG, with typical health items bolstered by various boosts.

At present, all of the guns are projectile-based. This means you will have to lead your shots in most situations.

As the game is still in its beta phase and still has a ways to go in terms of being a finished product, there is still room for improvement. However, with such an interesting foundation, fun setting, and interesting mechanics, Grit appears to be a refreshing addition to the battle royale genre based on what we know.

The Current State of Battle Royale

It would seem that one of the problems with the genre is innovation for innovation’s sake. Gamers want a fun and organic experience that rewards skill and yet is also new and refreshing. It still remains to be seen if Grit has the right combination of features that will give BR fans what they want, but in the interim, there are certainly other titles worth retrying or taking a look at if you want your battle royale fix.

That being said, you may want to think about taking advantage of our online gaming desktop builder if you want to enjoy these BR titles to the fullest. The thing about most battle royale games is that they require a decent gaming rig in order to run smoothly. If you are relying on a lower-end PC when playing games like Fortnite or Warzone, this could be a big cause of your frustration.

It’s no secret that the skill-gap has risen considerably in these games and in order to compete, you can’t afford to deal with lag and frame stutters in the middle of a match. Sure, performance isn’t everything when it comes to PC gaming, but in such a competitive genre as battle royale, it only makes sense to come equipped with a gaming computer that is up to the task.

"},{"id":"img1","sort_index":1,"type":"image","content":"clx-gaming-pc.jpg","alt":"CLX Gaming PC"},{"id":"p2","sort_index":2,"type":"paragraph","content":"

If you have felt as though the genre has gotten a bit stale or underwhelming, it could be the quality of your PC that is holding back your experience. Rather than sit through another match with washed-out graphics or horrible frame rates, it might be time to start thinking about upgrading. A better-quality custom PC build might be enough to rekindle your interest in the genre, and will also prepare you for upcoming titles like Grit as well.

Here at CLX, we offer a robust gaming desktop builder that you can use to assemble the ideal powerhouse PC that will help you play games like Warzone or Apex Legends without any annoying stutters or frame drops.
