Now in its 17th season, one would expect some slow down when it comes to updates or a more subdued approach to content changes, but it seems that the opposite is true.

All-out war has apparently descended onto the Fortnite island, and we’re better for it. With a refreshing assortment of map updates and gameplay changes, including the introduction of actual UFOs, this season is already standing out as one of the best in the chapter, if not in Fortnite history.

","id":"p0","sort_index":0,"type":"paragraph"},{"alt":"fortnite image 1","content":"fortnite-img1.jpg","id":"img1","sort_index":1,"type":"image"},{"content":"

However, it’s not without its caveats (as usual). Below we are going to highlight some of the most notable changes this season and why investing in a custom gaming computer might not be a bad idea if you want to continue playing Fortnite on PC long term. It’s clear based on the changes that Epic has been introducing with Fortnite in recent months, as well as the development of the new Unreal Engine 5, that the hardware requirements for this game are only going to keep increasing.

Notable Map Changes in Season 7

It’s always worth highlighting the new map changes when a season drops, to get a better understanding of the direction of the new content and the overall flavor of what you can expect on the battlefield.

That being said, the changes this season are more subtle compared to last, and one might say more balanced. The massive Spire dominating the center of the map in Season 6 was destroyed at the start of Season 7, to be replaced with another desolate yet interesting landscape full of twisted cotton-candy-colored trees and a pool of water. Unlike last season, this region will not be a hot drop.

In terms of the actual POIs, Colossal Crops has been replaced with Corny Complex, a hybrid of Frenzy Farm and a new alien research outpost. Other POI changes include minimal adjustments to Sweaty Sands (which is now titled Believer Beach), as well as a number of additional hi-tech outposts dotting the map, which actually see a lot of action for several reasons.

","id":"p2","sort_index":2,"type":"paragraph"},{"alt":"fortnite image 2","content":"fortnite-img2.jpg","id":"img3","sort_index":3,"type":"image"},{"content":"

These new research outposts all have dish themed names (Deep Woods Dish, Dockside Dish, and so on), and all feature special IO chests that drop great loot, as well as a permanent Launch Pad that can be used for easy rotations or equally easy escapes, if necessary. This interesting addition makes these spots well-suited for drops because even if you get caught up in a drawn-out conflict that extends well into the mid-game, you can always launch out to avoid the storm. The outposts themselves also feature NPCs that sell loot and offer other benefits as well, including a “mega loot crate” that drops a ton of care packages all over the map.

All of this pales in comparison to the introduction of “invasion zones.” At the start of every match, several of the named POIs will take on a purple font on the map, signifying that these locations are currently being invaded.

As you drop into these locations, you immediately have to adapt how you play in order to accommodate the general chaos that is ensuing. Invaded POIs typically have three UFOs that are hovering around causing general mayhem in their wake. This includes picking up and flinging trucks around with their tractor beams, and raining down giant plasma balls using their advanced weaponry. The UFOs even have the ability to scoop players up and carry them to different locations, or just fling them into an ongoing battle.

In other words, these invaded POIs offer a substantially different way to start a match, and play the game in general. The action only heats up further when players start to pilot the UFOs themselves. If you shoot one of these vehicles out of the sky, its alien occupant will hop out and fight you. Each UFO can be shot down three times before being permanently grounded and destroyed.

","id":"p4","sort_index":4,"type":"paragraph"},{"alt":"fortnite image 3","content":"fortnite-img3.jpg","id":"img5","sort_index":5,"type":"image"},{"content":"

Players in control of these UFOs gain access to all of their chaos-causing tools, including the tractor beam, which allows you to literally grab any object in the game (including parts of buildings, boulders, player vehicles, and even other players), and do with them what you will. On top of this, you can also harass players with the controversial energy balls, which can be difficult to deal with if you aren’t decisive.

Needless to say, these UFOS are a marked deviation from the other vehicles that Epic has introduced. The best thing to do when faced with an attacking UFO is to immediately attack back and ground it. Building is ineffectual as the UFOs never run out of ammo. Either way, these new invaded POIs usually dissolve into pure calamity, so in terms of experiencing the game a whole new way, Epic is definitely keeping the player base on its toes.

Welcome Changes Come to Crafting

No new Fortnite season would be complete without some changes and updates to the loot pool. Since last season introduced crafting into the mix, it only makes sense that the current available weapons would be heavily influenced by this system, and that is exactly what has happened.

Gone are the makeshift and primal weapons, as most of the classics are back, including the pump and tactical shotguns, regular SMGs, and bolt action sniper rifle. However, crafting is still present, which offers players with a more streamlined way to “side-grade” certain weapons.

With the help of a new crafting item, “nuts and bolts,” you can effectively turn the common weapons into popular counterparts that are only obtainable through this method.

The Pump and Tactical Shotguns can be turned into the Level Action Shotgun

The Assault Rifle and SCAR can be turned into the Burst Rifle and AUG

The SMG can be turned into the Rapid Fire SMG

Chances are this system will be expanded to include some variation to the sniper class (bolt action to heavy would be the most logical choice), but overall this system more closely represents a true crafting system based on Fortnite’s core set of weapons. This allows for an expansion of the weapon pool without cluttering up the loot tables for chests and care packages.

However, if the standard Fortnite weapons aren’t cutting it for you, this season also offers an array of advanced tech courtesy of the IO (The Imagined Order). These include a Recon Scanner which allows you to wall-hack, the pulse rifle (think: Stark rifle but not as overpowered), a ray gun that shoots a continuous beam of electricity, and the incredibly powerful Rail Gun, which needs to charge before firing and can actually damage players through walls.

","id":"p6","sort_index":6,"type":"paragraph"},{"alt":"fortnite image 3","content":"fortnite-img4.jpg","id":"img7","sort_index":7,"type":"image"},{"content":"

Generally speaking, most of these new guns act as supplements for a classic loadout and are not reliable replacements, although you could more than get by with a tactical shotgun, recon scanner, and rail gun. This combination offers an almost unbeatable threat, as you can pinpoint a player’s location behind a wall and then hit them through their defenses. Both of these weapons have already been banned in competitive formats so enjoy them in the main game while they last, as the nerfs are probably not far behind.

A New Battlepass Experience

So Rick Sanchez is on the Battlepass and that’s not even the most notable point this time around. In fact, the entire format of the Battlepass has changed to be somewhat more free form and flexible.

Using an adapted “battle stars” system, players are now able to select which reward they want depending on how many battle stars they possess. These are earned by leveling up in game.

There are limitations to this system however, as certain “pages” of the Battlepass are only unlocked upon reaching certain levels, so more or less the progression of rewards remains somewhat linear, especially if you spend all of your battle stars as soon as you get them. However, if you prefer to hold onto them until you level up far enough, you could nab certain rewards before other players. The choice is entirely up to you.

This season also introduces you to Kymera, a fully customizable alien outfit. Like previous customizable Battlepass skins, you have to level up and complete certain quests in order to gain access to all of Kymera’s various styles throughout the course of the season, most notably through the collection of special artifacts (of which there are several to find per week).

Keeping with the ongoing collabs that Epic Games is dishing out, Superman / Clark Kent is also featured on the Battepass this season. Whether you’re a fan of superheroes or not, you have to admit Epic knows how to put a BP together. Compared to the ongoing complaints on this front from fans of other popular battle royales, it’s nice to see that Epic is still putting effort into making each season’s pass worth the investment.

Are Custom Gaming Computers Necessary For Fortnite Going Forward?

Another interesting change that came packaged with Chapter 2: Season 7 was a full graphics update for the game to put the PC version of Fortnite more in line with the next-gen consoles.

While the game has enjoyed continuous graphical enhancements over the years on both PC and console, these changes were actually announced beforehand and even came with additional news that the minimum system requirements for Fortnite would be permanently bumped up.

For gamers with lower-end PCs, this has been somewhat of an ongoing saga. One of the reasons, it is thought, that Fortnite took off to begin with back in 2017 was due in part to its extremely optimized feel. When Fortnite first launched, it was not a graphically intense game by any means. In fact, many pointed out the fact that while they couldn’t play PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds at the time due to how poorly it would run on low to mid range gaming computers, they could play Fortnite with ease, uncapped frames and all.

This era was short-lived, however, as it seemed that with each successive season, Epic Games would add features and new effects into Fortnite that would hinder and compromise performance. Now the game rests somewhere on the other end of the spectrum in terms of system requirements, at least if you want the game to run smoothly and at a high frame rate. Rather than being an “anyone can play it even if you are on a dinosaur” kind of game (i.e. Minecraft), now you basically need a high-performance gaming PC in order to run the game properly.

The new recommended settings for Fortnite’s new Epic graphic settings also got upped, and are as follows:

Intel Core i7-8700, AMD Ryzen 7 3700x or equivalent

Nvidia GTX 1080, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or equivalent

4 GB VRAM or higher

16 GB RAM or higher

This puts the game squarely in line with many other graphically detailed AAA titles. Despite the iconic “cartoon” graphics that Fortnite is recognized for, the level of detail in its textures as well as the richness of its effects, alongside the various mechanics in the game, all demand a rather robust gaming rig in order to be properly managed.

There’s no sign that this trend toward higher specs is going to let up, either. Epic Games continues to push the envelope with what they are bringing to the gaming industry as a whole, and Fortnite is at the center of what they are doing. No doubt that when Unreal Engine 5 drops in 2022, this game will require even stronger graphics cards and CPUs in order to maintain optimal performance.

","id":"p8","sort_index":8,"type":"paragraph"},{"alt":"clx gaming pc","content":"clx-gaming-pc.jpg","id":"img9","sort_index":9,"type":"image"},{"content":"

Custom gaming computers are great for gamers that want to play their favorite titles without having to worry too much about these kinds of updates. While many were shocked about these new graphics updates for Fortnite, it only makes sense that Epic’s flagship game will continue to see regular updates that will require better hardware. While a custom rig isn’t necessarily a must, it’s a good investment if you want to stay on top of these updates and continue to dive into each new season of Fortnite without experiencing any performance issues.

If you are curious about which kinds of custom gaming PCs might be best suited for your needs, you’re already in the right place.
