I think I have a bad case of zombie fatigue developed after years of watching every major studio rehash the same idea over and over again. I stopped watching The Walking Dead right after Negan unceremoniously ended my two favorite characters, and never looked back.

However, after hearing everyone singing the praises of the latest Techland release, I had to yield to peer pressure, and let me tell you I'm very glad I purchased the game when I did because it offers me a much-needed respite from that other open-world game everyone is currently playing (ahem, Elden Ring).

This second iteration keeps the spirit of the first entry and maintains the frantic pace that made it so well received. But the game now offers a lot more. It is extremely fun to play with huge locations to explore and a boatload of things to do. It is still fast-paced and wild, but it is not as difficult to deter new players from jumping right in.

What Dying Light 2 brings to the table is a bigger and bolder game that definitely expands the amount of gameplay we can squeeze out of its simple yet compelling premise. They completely removed guns this time around making it even more unique in a universe of de-industrialized zombie games where bullets and mysteriously well-kept guns seem to spring out of the ground.

Game Background

The game takes place 22 years after the events of Dying Light. People have survived by sealing their communities behind walls trying to rebuild a semblance of society or civilization. The game´s location is a massive city called Villedor which is one of the largest scenarios I have ever played in a game of this style. Techland brings us a “euro feel” so many seem to enjoy nowadays.

While the whole place looks like a big playground for our character to spend the day monkeying around, the layout is pretty convincing. Even the most obvious ramp or soft-fall surface are convincingly placed so the game does a great job at keeping the suspension of disbelief mode on.

As usual, the game is populated by a variety of NPCs and enemies for you to interact with. There are, of course, mobs of infected doing their best to catch you. But the world is not desperately desolate like, say, Mad Max. There are a lot of encounters, both friendly and hostile, that keep the action going all through the game. Some are random characters with fun side quests, challenges, or barter opportunities. Then some factions can be helpful or downright evil, so you have to tread carefully into new areas because the threats are varied and deadly.

There are three main groups you may encounter during your supply runs or quests. The regular-looking survivors who, just like you I assume, just want to live and let live. Then there are the PeaceKeepers who want to bring order to the world but will put you into strong moral conflicts. And then there are the crazy psycho renegades who will remind you of Fallout bandits or Mad Max´s War Boys and are plain evil.

The game puts you in the shoes of a “Pilgrim”, an outcast group of wanderers, and one of the few individuals with the required wits and skills to make it “out there”.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human is an action RPG game that actually does things pretty competently. The character and skill progression in this game are really satisfying. I feel that titles nowadays do give you decent skill trees, but the skill points system feels too gradual and by the time you max out a skill, it no longer feels it has any impact. In contrast, every time you unlock a skill in Dying Light 2 Stay Human, it has a massive impact on the way you play and it is so much fun you wonder how come you could live without it. You start being a decent runner with some parkour tricks and end up turning into Batman literally raining death upon your enemies.

The story, and the way the game handles city-building, is a mixed bag. Many people have problems with the main story as the motivations of our character are not that convincing or even enticing for starters. Then, the main events in the story do not give you a lot of room for choice, and the decisions you make storywise do not really affect the way the game plays.

However, some choices can visibly affect gameplay and future outcomes. Like in many of these survivor open-world games, you get to help factions capture positions and build outposts to advance their strategic goals. Every time you take control of an important building or windmill you must decide whether to give it to the militaristic Peacemakers, or the cunning Survivors. Whenever survivors gain terrain, they provide you with gadgets that enhance your mobility, while the Peacekeepers help you increase your damage or defense. However, I would have liked to see more direct consequences from those decisions, like one side resenting they didn't get a strategic outpost or that you are not supporting their cause enough. Nonetheless, these are the only instances where your decisions seem to really matter as each faction will change your map a lot when they take hold of it. So, you have to do a lot of exploring and make sure you know what areas you will want to be able to reach before conceding an outpost to either faction.

While the story is kind of decent and serves as bait for players to get interested and keep things going, it was kind of forgettable. The adventure can feel disjointed at times, and acting was nothing to write home about, even with the presence of Rosario Dawson as one of the major characters. However, I didn't find anything so egregious that would turn me away from having a great time running around and finding new locations.

Dying Light 2 Staying Human is an incredible sequel to a game that was already great and definitely deserves a lot more attention than it is receiving right now.

Can I Run Dying Light 2 Stay Human On My PC?

The game is beautiful and massive. This means it can be hard on your computer if you don't have enough processing power installed.

Techland was kind enough to reveal 2 spec sheets; one for those who need ray tracing and all the bells and whistles, and those who just want to maximize performance.

The minimum requirements force users to get a Ryzen 3 2300X or i3-9100 processor, coupled with either an RX 560 or a GTX 1050 video card. However, this will only give you 30fps and won't look as great. Moreover, you will experience massive FPS drops during fights that, for many, can be game-breaking. I personally found this configuration unplayable, but you do you.

Now, if you want to experience this amazing game the way the devs intended, you are going to need at least something equipped with a Ryzen 7 3700X and an RTX 2080 with 10GB of VRAM. Fortunately for you, we have a selection of gaming desktops for sale that range from minimally specced PCs to high-end gaming PCs that can handle Dying Light 2 Stay Human in Quad HD or 4K without dropping any precious FPS.
