It’s slated for a 2022 release but we’re well into February and Relic’s still playing it close to the vest, but let’s be clear: real-time strategy, nearly immersive combat simulation, and history, in general, are getting a serious jolt of a jumpstart with this reimagining.

Company of Heroes 3: What We Know So Far

Everyone, including Relic, has done the European theater of WWII over and over again a thousand times. That and the Pacific Theater have been beaten to death by gamers a thousand times over.

Relic was adventurous enough to carry gamers to the Eastern Front of World War II, and now they’ve outdone themselves. Company of Heroes 3 transports players to the Mediterranean Theater of Operations with never before experienced realism.

This is the largest game launch in the history of the franchise. Set between the period from 1943 to 1945, players have two different options: to re-experience history or redefine it and can play as either the Axis (Nazi Germany) or Allied Powers (Commonwealth or U.S forces).

What’s interesting about the gameplay is that interactions between the Allied factions are not always, shall we say, positive. You can run into tension between the U.S and U.K factions, complicating campaigns - and you’ll even need to manage, or placate the Italian forces through a liaison if you play as the Allied forces. It brings strategy - both diplomatic and military - to a whole new level.

There are three modes of gameplay in CoH3: A single-player mode, a skirmish mode (multiplayer) for groups, and a competitive multiplayer mode, with options for 1 v. 1 through 4 v 4 playability.

Another thing that’s really exciting about this upcoming release is that you can control the different warring factions at the same time, making the campaign map much more dynamic. They’re calling it a “non-linear, decision-filled dynamic campaign map.”

It sounds cool on paper but it’s so much more interesting (read: overwhelming) in practice. It’s a wordy way of saying “this whole map could hit the fan at literally any given time.”

Seriously, we’ll call it “immersive,” and we wouldn’t be the first ones to do so, but that doesn’t paint the whole picture. The developers have gone above and beyond to make sure that every part is a moving one.

Lose sight of what’s happening across the map and you could be behind the 8-ball before you blink. Tanks and artillery change the strategic occupation of the map before your eyes (or behind your back if you’re not paying attention) while paratroopers could rain down from the sky at any minute.

It’s fast-paced, almost lifelike. It keeps you on your toes and the need to manage the interplay between factions on your own team adds a dimension of realism we find refreshing. It’s like managing group politics in real life, except in the game, at any moment, you could be sweeping up a team loss that you didn’t see coming, in just a matter of seconds.

With respect to the campaigns, they are turn-based but take place on big maps with many moving parts and are surprisingly dynamic. Even though you’ll have actual objectives you need to complete to “win,” it’s surprising how flexible the game is when it comes to letting you pursue a strategy. It almost feels open-ended.

Strategic advantage - as well as what you need to protect - will change with respect to the territory you gain or lose. Gaining more ground can give you access to more resources, or to an airfield or a port, for example, but it also will make your supply lines thinner and expose you to attack from new angles.

You can expect that to happen. It keeps things exciting.

What’s New in Company of Heroes 3

One of the coolest new features of CoH3 is the “tactical pause” feature, although we can’t help but feel like it’s sort of a cheat.

Basically, it’s like this. Whenever you’re playing in singleplayer, you can hit the “pause” button and give orders to your troops that will be carried out the second you unpause the game. What we like about it is how it enables you to leverage multiple dynamic resources to carry out a strategy, which, in a sense is realistic. However, in a “real fight” you can’t just hit pause. But, it’s new and cool.

The granularity of the destruction system has gotten a serious boost, too. Buildings are not either “intact” or “gone.” You can partially destroy a building, and then take advantage of the rubble; it doesn’t disappear. If an artillery strike takes the top off of a tower, half of the tower can remain standing and you can still duck behind the rubble for cover.

Together, these add a whole new dimension of realism to CoH gameplay.

Can Your Current System Run Company of Heroes 3? What Are the Minimum Requirements for a Gaming PC Kit?

You’ll want a high-end gaming PC kit or pre-build rig to get the most out of CoH3’s graphics and intense gameplay. It’s recommended that your gaming desktop’s hardware should support a minimum of 60FPS and 1080p resolution if you want to enjoy this game as the devs intended.

The high-graphics settings will require either a GeForce GTX 1070 or a Radeon RX Vega 56 to run the game smoothly on the high settings. Your graphics card should meet the minimum specs of a GeForce GTX 1060 or a Radeon RX 580 8GB with at least an Intel Core i5 6-core 1.7GHz CPU to meet the minimum requirements, but faster is better.

That is if you want to get the most out of this game. Luckily, we make it easy to build gaming PCs from gaming PC kits and we sell pre-built rigs that can immerse you in CoH gameplay.

If you love strategy and history, CoH3 will serve you both on a (new) silver platter.
