However, some bosses are so blatant they have earned derision and contempt from the gaming community and are a good source of memes. Developers sometimes force us to fight absurdly unfair bosses designed to provoke anger, rage quitting, or sudden furniture restructuring.</p><p><br></p><p>We´re going to discuss X video game bosses that (almost) made gamers rage-quit.</p><h2><br data-mce-bogus='1'></h2><h2>Batman: Arkham Asylum</h2><p>Nobody denies that Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of the best Batman games, and it gives the Metroidvania category real interesting twists that make it a unique title.</p><p><br></p><p>As you progress through the game, you start realizing that the Scarecrow is playing with your head in very disturbing ways. You are often doused with a mind-altering toxin, initiating horror-inducing nightmare sequences that really mess with Bruce Wayne´s head.</p><p><br></p><p>The last time this happens, the game presents something that seems like a glitch. Then it restarts but now you are in control of the Joker who finally captured his arch-enemy. The sequence ends when the Joker shoots the Batman and the game notifies you that you failed, prompting you to retry or quit.</p><p><br></p><p>This is certainly the worst nightmare. There was nothing you did that caused you to fail. Why does the game want you to retry?</p><p><br></p><p>It turns out, the scarecrow is now playing with our heads making clever use of 4th wall smashing that has caused many to quit the game giving the Scarecrow an easy victory.</p><h2><br data-mce-bogus='1'></h2><h2>Mortal Kombat IX</h2><p>Mortal Kombat has set the bar for what fighting games should be for decades. The fighting mechanics are incredibly good, the graphics have always been top-of-the-line, and the characters and lore have spawned an incredibly loyal following over the years, making it the most beloved fighting game franchise in history.</p><p><br></p><p>However, what made Mortal Kombat so great is that you were no longer limited to knocking your opponent out. The game made it possible to beat your rival to a literal pulp, using extremely creative combinations of moves that resulted in extremely rewarding when executed correctly.</p><p><br></p><p>Mortal Kombat IX punishes button mashing and spamming, forcing you to master combos and powerful moves as you climb up the ladder, only to end up facing an infuriatingly cheap boss.</p><p><br></p><p>Shao Kahn is one of the worst final battles in all Mortal Kombat games. This is not to say that we just have to “git gud” to beat him. The final battle literally forces you to win using the lamest moves and tactics, finishing the battle by way of running away and dealing cheap shots. Shao Kahn can block all of your attacks but you´re not granted that ability and, to add insult to injury, many of his moves are protected by invincibility frames and can chew out almost half of your life bar in one go.</p><h2><br data-mce-bogus='1'></h2><h2>Undertale</h2><p>This weird game was made by one-man-army Toby Fox thanks to the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign. The result is an endearing adventure with different endings depending on how you choose to play. Unlike many other games that just let you pick a path and follow a storyline, Undertale takes into account your battle tactics and how much violence you decide to use to advance the story. Additionally, the title features a pastiche of game mechanics that keeps players on their toes. Dialogs that can turn into turn-based fights, intense bullet-hell scenarios, mind-bending puzzles, and RPG elements combined with the opportunity to hack-and-slash their way into the story.</p><p><br></p><p>The game does make it a point that it won't treat you fairly and has no problem pulling the rug under your feet.</p><p><br></p><p>This is the case of Flowey when it turns into the completely insane Photoshop Flowey when you take the “neutral” route during the game. Before the encounter, Flowey sets some ground rules: It will create its own save file, you won't be able to load your own save files during the fight, and it will tear you to pieces.</p><p><br></p><p>The battle is as unfair as you´d expect. The evil entity unleashes massive barrages of attacks that range from star-shaped bullets, vine attacks, flies, bullets, flames, bombs, and the weapons of the six human souls it previously absorbed.</p><p><br></p><p>If Photoshop Flowey defeats you, it will load a save file to have you watch your death again and again. If you defeat it, it will also load the save file so both of you regain all lost health and start fighting again. This battle is infuriatingly frustrating as your enemy keeps finding more ways to mock your tactics whether they are effective or not.</p><p><br></p><p>Of course, developers have taken note, and now realize that being fair is not always good. Gamers today are hungry for games and enemies that challenge their skills in ways they have never seen before.
